Legends collide in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as two epic foes clash in a dramatic confrontation with the destiny of the planet at stake. Kong and his guards go on a treacherous trip to locate his rightful home, accompanied by Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom he has developed an unbreakable attachment. However, they unintentionally find themselves in the path of an infuriated Godzilla, who is wreaking havoc around the globe. The epic battle between the two titans, sparked by invisible powers, is merely the beginning of the mystery that lurks deep under the Earth's core.

Godzilla and Kong are the only active Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla and Ghidorah battled and killed each other for control in 2019. A storm generated by Ghidorah combined with the storm cell that surrounds Skull Island has caused the climate to become unstable, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulates the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him with company and company.

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an Apex Cybernetics employee and presenter of the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates material implying dark operations at a Pensacola Apex facility, but Godzilla appears and suddenly strikes. Among the rubble of the facility, Bernie discovers a bizarre piece of equipment like a huge robotic eye.

Following the attack, the public, impressed by Godzilla's abilities to defend humanity, turned against him. Madison Russell, an adult listener to Bernie's podcast, is terrified about the newest Godzilla attack on her school. When she tries to reason with her widowed father Mark (who also happens to be the Monarch's director) regarding the origins of Godzilla's rampage, he dismisses all she says, only stating that animals may change like people. Madison enlists the help of her best friend Josh Valentine to solve the secrets surrounding Apex and the guy responsible for Godzilla's rampage.

For a strong energy source, Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons employs Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist. Nathan is cautious at first since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by an anti-gravity field within the tunnel. Walter says Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized aircraft capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

Since Skull Island is no longer able to contain Kong (because Kong has grown too large), Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with his idea of using Kong as their navigator in order to lead them to the Hollow Earth. Ilene first rejects the task, but when Nathan convinces her that this is the only way to end Godzilla's rampage and locate Kong a new home, she ultimately agrees.

In a modified barge, Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex crew lead by Walter's daughter Maia board to prevent a mildly drugged Kong from escaping. Kong is locked up to keep him from escaping. Kong gets restless and upset one rainy night, and he begins to tug on the shackles that keep him restrained. Jia calms him down by allowing her and Kong to hold fingers in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. Later, Ilene tells Nathan how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter when violent and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and their parents, but Jia herself was the sole survivor since Kong protected her, resulting in the two of them developing a strong affinity with one another.

The Titan comes and assaults the soldiers before capsizing the barge, almost drowning Kong and the others onboard. In the end, Nathan frees Kong by releasing his shackles, enabling him to fight Godzilla beneath long enough to swim up to the surface and overturn the barge, rescuing the passengers from drowning. Kong goes onto a neighboring aircraft ship to meet Godzilla. After a brutal encounter, fighter aircraft distract Godzilla sufficiently for Kong to force him back into the sea. To avoid the atomic detonation, Kong leaps off the copyright, but Godzilla wraps his tail around him and pulls him into the water, aiming to drown the Titan.

Fortunately, as Godzilla is being shocked by deep charges, Kong is able to surface for air, thereby ending the conflict.

Because there is no other option, Nathan decides that the group should turn off all of the ships' engines to fool Godzilla into thinking he has destroyed them and Kong has been defeated, which they eventually do. Godzilla looks at the shattered fleet with interest and then swims away, assuming he has triumphed. Realizing that reactivating the ships may allow Godzilla to return, the party decides to fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entrance site in Antarctica, where Ghidorah was initially frozen. Jia explains to Kong that his house is via the front door, but he is hesitant to walk through it.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover an ecology that is identical to that of Skull Island within the Hollow Earth. They are assaulted by a pair of Warbats while traversing the countryside, with one of the Warbats destroying one of the HEAVs in the process. Kong was able to rescue the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second Warbat, knocking it out cold. However, the beast recovers and constricts itself around Kong, saving him from certain death. In order for the Warbat to suffocate Kong, the creature is hit by missiles fired by Nathan's squad from their HEAV, allowing Kong to break free and savagely thrash the monster to death before feeding on the Warbat's corpse by consuming its intestines.

Kong and Nathan's squad then begin their quest, finally arriving at a massive stone temple that belonged to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old struggle between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they explore the inside, and Kong discovers an ancient axe crafted from a dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's species before settling upon a massive throne. Kong discovers that the same power source that Nathan's team needs to increase Mechagodzilla's power supply can also recharge Kong's axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the discovery of the century, Maia and the Apex crew utilize spider-like drones to collect the power source and transport it back to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia orders her soldiers to fire at Nathan's crew, but Kong screams passionately in defense. Meanwhile, Mechagodzilla sends a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and rushes towards Hong Kong.

There, Godzilla finds his way into the heart of the city and, recognizing Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, uses his atomic breath to bore a tunnel through the environment, causing the temple to collapse. While Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks, Maia and her team attempt to flee in their HEAV, only for Kong to grab it on their way out and, despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to escape, he instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to make sure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan aren't in there, killing Maia and her personnel inside.

Back at the Apex headquarters, Walter enthusiastically instructs Ren to dispatch Mechagodzilla to eliminate Godzilla. Ren cautions him against utilizing the new Hollow Earth energy source without first conducting tests, but Walter dismisses his pleas and tells him to activate the mecha. Simultaneously, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for invading Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison blames Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused all of this, however Walter boldly answers that he took responsibility for allowing humanity to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.

First, Kong observes Godzilla fight with its mechanical counterpart, then Jia convinces him that Godzilla isn't truly his opponent. After seeing Godzilla being overrun by the Mechagodzilla, Jia tells Kong that the robot is in fact the "real" adversary, not Godzilla, and he believes her. While repairing his dislocated limb, Kong eventually accepts Godzilla's offer to aid and put aside his feelings of resentment before going into fight.

When Godzilla sees Kong holding his axe, he supercharges it by blasting it with his atomic breath, causing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb from limb and pull its head off before putting up his prize and sitting down to rest.

Madison reunites with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie, who are happy to see Mark and ask him onto his show to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla suddenly approaches Kong, forcing the Titan to take his axe and restart the battle. Godzilla doesn't attack, but stares Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, ending the conflict between his species and Godzilla's. Godzilla and Kong are now equals, and Godzilla returns to the sea quietly, with Kong and all the people watching.

Godzilla vs. Kong has received a mostly favorable reception. As of April 16, 2021, the film has 341 reviews on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, 254 of which are fresh, with a "Tomatometer" rating of 74% certified Fresh. According to the site's reviewers' consensus section, "Delivering squarely on its title, Godzilla vs. Kong swats away character development and human drama to deliver all the spectacle you'd expect from giant monsters slugging it out."
